The deteriorating fingerprint made entirely out of lines of cocaine represent the main theme of identity in the movie.
Bruce Roberston as a detective is seeking the identity of a murderer in order to solve a case and climb the job ladder. As the film progresses we witness him embark in excessive drug use and gradually looses himself in his quest. Eventually the story no longer revolves around the identity of the murderer but rather Robertson and his deteriorating self.
